The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
